The fastest 2TB SSD for gaming today is a PCIe 5.0 drive, and the top models now read at nearly 15,000MB/s, about twice the limit of PCIe 4.0. If you have a recent AMD AM5 or Intel board with a Gen5 M.2 slot, these are the drives that unlock it.
We ranked six 2TB Gen5 drives by the maker's rated sequential read speed, then scored them on write speed, cache, cooling needs and value. All figures come from each maker's Amazon listing, checked October 11, 2026. Scores are our editorial scores out of 10, not Amazon customer ratings. Rated speeds are maximums under ideal conditions; real game load times depend on the game and the rest of your PC.

In-Depth Reviews
1. SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 8100 2TB: Fastest Overall
The SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 8100 2TB has the highest rated read speed we found for a 2TB drive: up to 14,900MB/s, with writes up to 14,000MB/s and random performance up to 2.3M / 2.4M IOPS. It uses 8th generation BiCS TLC NAND.
It also cost less than several slower Gen5 drives in our check, which is why it wins on both speed and value.
2. Kingston FURY Renegade G5 2TB: Runner-Up for Speed
The Kingston FURY Renegade G5 2TB is rated for reads up to 14,800MB/s and writes up to 14,000MB/s. Kingston uses a 6nm SM2508 controller with low-power DDR4 cache and a 12-layer PCB.
It carries a 5-year manufacturer warranty but cost more than the GX PRO 8100 when we checked.
3. Samsung 9100 PRO 2TB with Heatsink: Fastest with Heatsink
If your motherboard has no M.2 heatsink, the Samsung 9100 PRO 2TB with Heatsink includes one. It reads at up to 14,700MB/s and writes at up to 13,400MB/s, and Samsung claims up to 49% better power efficiency than the 990 PRO.
Samsung says the heatsink version is as slim as 0.35 inches, but it was the most expensive drive here.
4. Lexar NM1090 PRO 2TB: Best Speed per Dollar
The Lexar NM1090 PRO 2TB reads at up to 14,000MB/s and writes at up to 13,000MB/s, with both DRAM and SLC cache. Lexar lists support for Microsoft DirectStorage.
It gives up a little peak speed to the top three but cost less than all of them in our check.
5. Sabrent Rocket 5 2TB: Best for Mixed PCs
The Sabrent Rocket 5 2TB is rated for transfers up to 14GB/s and uses DirectStorage-optimized firmware. Sabrent says it works with Windows, macOS and Linux and is backward compatible with older slots.
The Amazon listing does not state a separate write speed, so we list it as not stated. Sabrent sells an optional heatsink.
6. Corsair MP700 PRO 2TB: Best Known-Brand Alternative
The Corsair MP700 PRO 2TB is an earlier Gen5 design with reads up to 12,400MB/s and writes up to 11,800MB/s. It supports DirectStorage and uses high-density 3D TLC NAND.
It is the slowest drive here and was not the best value in our check, so pick it mainly if you prefer Corsair.
How to Choose the Fastest 2TB SSD for Gaming
You Need a PCIe 5.0 Slot
All six drives here are Gen5. In a Gen4 slot they run at Gen4 speed, around 7,000MB/s. Check your motherboard manual for a Gen5 M.2 slot, usually the one closest to the CPU.
Rated Speed vs Real Load Times
Rated speeds are sequential maximums. Most games load only a little faster on Gen5 than on a good Gen4 drive, although large installs and file copies are much faster.
Cooling
Gen5 drives produce more heat. Use the motherboard M.2 heatsink or a drive with one included, like the Samsung 9100 PRO with Heatsink.
DirectStorage
Microsoft DirectStorage lets supported games stream data from the SSD more efficiently. Several drives here list support.

Quick Setup Tips
- Enable Gen5 in BIOS: some boards default the M.2 slot to auto; leave it on auto or Gen5
- Avoid lane sharing: on some boards, using the Gen5 M.2 slot reduces GPU lanes; check the manual
- Use the heatsink: reinstall the board's M.2 heatsink with its thermal pad
- Update firmware: use the maker's software after installation
- Install games to it: put your largest, most-played games on the Gen5 drive
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest 2TB SSD for gaming?
The SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 8100 2TB, rated for reads up to 14,900MB/s.
Will a Gen5 SSD make games load much faster?
Usually only a little faster than a top Gen4 drive. The bigger gains are in installs and file copies.
Do fast Gen5 SSDs need a heatsink?
Yes, a heatsink is strongly recommended. Most Gen5 boards include one for the M.2 slot.
Can I use a Gen5 SSD in a PS5?
The PS5 uses PCIe Gen4, so a Gen5 drive would run at Gen4 speed and still needs a heatsink. A Gen4 drive is the better value.
What is the fastest 2TB SSD with a heatsink?
The Samsung 9100 PRO 2TB with Heatsink, rated for reads up to 14,700MB/s.
The Bottom Line
The SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 8100 2TB is the fastest 2TB SSD for gaming in 2026, followed closely by the Kingston FURY Renegade G5 2TB. Choose the Samsung 9100 PRO 2TB with Heatsink if your board lacks M.2 cooling, or the Lexar NM1090 PRO 2TB for the most speed per dollar.
